The Prophet ﷺ said that before the Hour, time would shrink, deeds would shrink, greed would grow and tribulations would spread, and that harj would increase. His Companions (ra) asked what harj was. He answered with one word, twice: killing. In another narration he said a day would come when the killer does not know why he kills and the one killed does not know why he dies.

Dr. Omar Suleiman reads these narrations against a world where killing has become distant and senseless, and where a massacre can arrive as just another update. He explains why a believer cannot get used to mass death, and how two sets of the Prophet’s ﷺ instructions that seem to contradict each other fit together: one for standing against oppression, and one for staying out of a fight when no one can tell who is right.

We used to just show up at each other’s homes. Nowadays... not so much.

The Qur’an stops to tell the story of Ibrahim (AS) welcoming guests into his home. It’s a bigger lesson than it looks.

He marched in the Prophet’s ﷺ army, waiting for his chance to kill him.

Shayba ibn Uthman (ra) lost his father, his uncle and his cousins in a single day at Uhud. It is narrated that at Hunayn, when the Muslim lines broke and people fled, he found himself right behind the Prophet ﷺ with nothing between them but his sword. What happened next turned the man who came for revenge into one reported to have stood his ground beside the Prophet ﷺ. He later became a keeper of the Ka’bah, and his family holds its keys to this day.

Grief can harden into a hatred with every reason behind it. The Prophet ﷺ answered this one with a hand on the chest instead of a sword, then told Shaybah that Allah had intended better for him than he had intended for himself.

Does Islam only talk about a husband’s sexual needs?

No.

A woman’s desire isn’t ignored, dismissed, or treated as less important. Intimacy within marriage is a mutual right. Watch the latest episode with Dr. Tesneem Alkiek on Real Talk S2 now: https://yqn.io/02822f

Sudden death is one of the signs of the Hour. In a time when death comes without warning, Dr. Omar Suleiman says hiding it from our children doesn’t protect them. Helping them understand it does.

In Hadith 6 of Imam Nawawi’s 40, the Prophet ﷺ said the halal is clear and the haram is clear, and that between them are doubtful matters many people don't know. Whoever stays away from those matters protects their religion. What happens to the one who keeps drifting into them?

Hadith 7 was explained to the Companions in a total four words in Arabic: The religion is naseeha (sincerity). But, towards who? Sh. Mohammad Elshinawy explains why the word means much more than advice, and how the early Muslims lived it, and how it applies specifically to our relationship with the Qur’an and Muslim leaders.

“Anchored: 40 Hadith for Today’s Muslim” is a new series by Sh. Mohammad Elshinawy which draws insights from Imam an-Nawawi (rh)’s collection of 40 hadith and applies them to some of the most pressing questions Muslims face today.

Tune in every Saturday at 9 AM CST/3 PM GMT for a new episode of Anchored!

Something in Uthman’s heart changed in that moment, but it would take years for him to accept the truth.

And this choice would be followed by an honor like no one else has ever held.

Most people believe what the people around them believe, and Muslim children are no exception.

A child who watches a parent jump up from the dinner table because a prayer is about to pass learns that Allah is real in that house. A child who watches prayer times come and go learns something too, and eventually concludes that their parents never really believed it either.

Sh. Mohammad Elshinawy talks about how the need to belong is human nature, and that a Muslim community should put it to work for the truth instead of fighting it. The home comes first, because children form their picture of Allah largely from how their parents treat them. The masjid comes next, as the extended family most of us no longer have. Beyond it are neighbours who know you well enough to defend you.

Your children are already deciding what you believe. They are deciding it at prayer time.

When intimacy is discussed in Islam, why does it sometimes sound like only the husband’s needs matter?

A wife has needs, rights, and feelings that cannot simply be ignored—and the Prophetic tradition makes that clear.

Sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t know better. It’s that you’re smart enough to come up with a convincing reason for doing what you already wanted to do.

When desire takes the lead, your intellect can become its defense attorney.

Before you justify it, ask yourself: Am I looking for the truth or an excuse? Learn more: https://yqn.io/a5b208
