Drawing on Abdul Halim Abu Shuqqah’s groundbreaking work, they explore how the Quran and Prophetic tradition depict women as active participants in family, social, professional, and public life, and how later Muslim societies sometimes imposed restrictions that went well beyond those early precedents. But they also examine where Abu Shuqqah’s reform project may not go far enough, including on divorce, polygamy, hijab, and gender relations. The discussion leaves us to reflect on whether Muslims are called simply to preserve the social arrangements of the past, or to continue the Quran’s movement toward justice in the circumstances of our own time.
